Breakfast: The Most Important Meal February 27, 2014Jules 3 CommentsI can’t speak high enough praises for Zack the Lad… going through his soundcloud was mind blowing, future, funk, trap, eclectic beats.. a whole range! I have no idea how this guy is sneaking by with anything less than 60k followers, with someone this good, There is just no way. So I figured he must be part of something else or someone sneaking around in disguise. Turns out he is also Trolley Snatcha, who’s slangin some sweet beats too, with a much different dubby and bass style. I am so impressed with this guy, I can’t even… Just listen to the crafting and variation from song to song. I can’t pick one so I’ll post two, but after that you just MUST go stalk his soundcloud and don’t forget Trolley Snatcha too!! I would definitely put this guy in a burrito and have it for breakfast… whatever that means. Bass, Eclectic, FutureBassbass, breakfast burrito, future, trolley snatcha, zack the ladShare : Tweet
Humpday Hero February 26, 2014Jules 2 CommentsDon’t let the impending rain storm that will destroy all of Los Angeles get you down! Just get up and dance to this sick shit until the 3 HUGE inches of rain ultimately sweeps you into a storm drainage gutter. It will be so worth it, trust me. A-Trak and Lex Luger did a stellar job producing this if you ask me, building this song like a rollercoaster, taking you on delightful joy ride filled with drums, high hats and echo-y vocals. This song is so money, Travi$ needs a dollar sign in his name. RIGHT?!! Oh trap, how I adore thee… Trap, Trap Hop"100 Bottles", "lex luger", "travi$ scott", A-Trak, trapShare : Tweet
Can’t Stand Still February 22, 2014Jules 4 CommentsI’ve been a fan of Unlimited Gravity for a while now, but I have to admit I kinda let it drop off the map when I started swimming through the massive sea of electronic music recently. I’m glad he popped back up on my radar with this jam right here! This song kinda has a Phutureprimitive feel to it with a sprinkle of dnb… just a sprinkle, because I can’t handle more than that. Unlimited Gravity does a great job of mixing vocals with the bass and it only gets better as the song goes on, at 5:16 I was quite pleasantly surprised with the variation of sounds that popped on in there! But, he’s from Denver so… obviously he’s good. Bass, DNB"Boss Miller", "Unlimited Gravity", bass, dont stand stillShare : Tweet
Patrick Reza Interview February 19, 2014Jules 3 CommentsOh you knowww.. just havin a spot of tea with Patrick Reza… If you had to pick one instance memory or moment that influenced you to start producing music, what would that be? July 21, 2007 seeing Daft Punk’s Alive Tour. Them and Aphex Twin really got me introduced into the electronic music scene. As far as dubstep I was really pulled into the genre from my appreciation and love for Bassnectar and Zeds Dead’s early productions, for example Timestretch, Magical World, and Eyes on Fire Remix. What do you think is the most challenging part of making music for you? I think one of the most difficult parts of producing electronic music these days is trying not to get caught up in the wave of those who are riding on some bandwagon. It’s really important for you to have you’re own unique sound. Additionally, as far as my production the hardest part for me is trying to glue opposing sounds together, i.e. huge chords and a face ripping bass to sound cohesive in the overall tune. When you aren’t slaving over a song, what else captivates your attention? Who is your biggest supporter? As far as personal supporters I’d have to give it up to my family, girlfriend, and friends. They’re always there pushing me to better myself and my productions. As far as professionally, I’d have to say one of my biggest dreams has come true in that I was able to work with and gain support from Bassnectar. What song of yours is most personal to you and why? I think Take Me Away is the song I am most proud of as it is my first fully original song in which I was happy with the lyrics, vocals, vocal processing, and instrumentation. Lyrically speaking it really captures the essence of my mindset while producing. Shout out to my girl Jilian for killing it on that track! Do you have a favorite set of plugins you typically tend to use when processing basslines? I tend to use a lot of the stuff that comes Native in Ableton. As far as baseline synthesis I usually stick to Operator, Massive, and Sylenth for the midrange bass stuff. I use my Analog Arturia MiniBrute for my sub bass. Your snares are always so fat and bottom heavy. Could you tell us some of the steps you take when processing snares? The key to making good snares is really in working with good samples to begin with. As far as processing I usually tend to do minimal compression, eq notch at anywhere from 180-220hz (depending on the key) to beef up the initial punch/ring of the snare. Lastly I always throw a low pass filter around 150hz to keep room for the subbass and the kick. Your drums are very punchy and translate well on any system. Could you give any tips on how to maintain your drum transients so that they punch through a mix even if its heavily limited? Side chaining is really a key factor on making room for everything in the mix. Additionally, I use fabfilter pro-q on almost every channel doing very precise harmonic eking to get rid of all the “muddy” frequencies. At the end of the day the real trick is knowing how to mix down a track and create room for everything. That way you can get great dynamic range and volume with minimal smashing/limiting. And lastly, where would you like to be in 5 years? A Headline Tour with full stage design and production, work on some more movie soundtracks and establish my own label to help out up and coming producers get started. Thank you Patrick, we are so excited to see you at your next show in Los Angeles: Alive! A music festival teaming up with nonprofit organization We Are The Movement to create an INSANE experience filled with crazy performances, live painting, art installations, interactive art and amazing beats by Epoch Rises, Tristan Hendy, DJ Miss Dust, Baaze and Bullet Made Statues! LOSTON INTERVIEW February 13, 2014Jules 2 CommentsLOSTON. So hot right now. LOSTON. Listen to the beauty, then hear the secrets behind the sweetness…. So, where did the name Loston come from? It was a secret song on a Glassjaw album from 2000 that I always liked. It was actually called Losten but i switched it out to get the sound cloud page. Very boring story. Why and how did you get into producing music? I played in bands a lot growing up and had been djing for a few years but not really writing at all. I wanted to get back into writing and I guess the ease of making music digitally appealed to me. Its a very personal exercise, and I really do not sleep much or well so it gave me a productive outlet to make me feel like less of a crackhead. I started writing and learning the programs in July last year. I never had any real intention of releasing anything, it was more of just a personal project , but after some friends heard it I decided to put up a sound cloud. Can you give us some insight into your creative process? It starts with some basic inspiration and moves in to total doubt, quickly transforming into self loathing for about 3 weeks then I scrap the whole idea and put the song together in about an hour. Im a graphic designer, it is exactly the same process, persistence is the key, you need to wade through a whole lot of shit to get to something good. Did you expect Retrograde to become such a hit so quickly? Tell us about it. Not at all. I actually thought it was funny when I first started making it, that was the first thing I ever worked on so it was hard to tell when it was actually finished. It still ends super abruptly but i think I will probably extend it slightly for live sets. I have a whole second verse that is really cool but i just never finished it. As I said before, I legitimately had no intention on releasing it, so the final version on soundcloud is literally what was floating around in my car when my friends heard it. What’s your favorite way of manipulating and processing vocals? I have played with chopping them into a sampler and pitching them like that, but generally i prefer to work in waveforms rather than midi, so I usually just chop, pitch and reverse shit. Everything starts with a vocal for me, so ill make a loop or a number of loops and structure it that way. I am not heavily into dance music so its more natural for me to put a beat to a melody rather than the other way around. -What would you say is your “go to” synth for making those big leads? Haha fuck I really don’t know. The retrograde synth was actually a section of the original pitched real high with 3 other synths behind it. Im pretty sure if some people saw my workflow they would laugh. I just revise and add things until I get the sound I like. I have no real idea about synths, I just scroll through and manipulate things until I get the sound that I want. Who are your influences in the EDM scene right now? I have very little interest in EDM. I listen to a lot of melancholy shit like james blake, xxyyxx, jai paul etc, and a lot of rap and rap production stuff, i feel like a lot of rap production is really forward thinking in comparison to EDM. What is the most personal thing you can reveal about producing music or what music means to you? Ummm, its not really that personal, I am always working on 5 or 6 projects at a time but when I really get into something it takes a long time for me to be happy with it. The sampha remix has over 15 completely different songs, like completely different songs based on that one vocal hook. I was sort of happy with most of them but knew they weren’t great, then late one night i wrote the hook and knew that that was the one. I think you need to be that self critical, people sub conscisouly appreciate that. Maybe. What are your goals in the coming year? I have a bunch of originals I am working on and a few tracks for some rappers. I am going to release a rework of a Banks song in the next couple of weeks then start dropping some originals and a few other loop based reworks I have not yet put out. I’ll be playing shows as of April and probably traveling around a bit. Thank you so much! We look forward to hearing more of your amazing creations and seeing you at a show! Be sure to stalk Loston in everything he does. Seriously, find out what he had for breakfast: https://soundcloud.com/loston https://www.facebook.com/lostonnn INTERVIEWinterview, lostonShare : Tweet
Dimonds are a girl’s best friend February 11, 2014Jules 2 CommentsSo, I admit, I’ve been a little late on the An-Ten-Nae train. I only recently became hooked at Burning Man this past year. It was the first night I arrived in Black Rock City so obviously I was obligated to see the sun rise! And thank heaven almighty, because that’s when we stumbled upon An-Ten-Nae reigning mind melting bass upon the desert. After dancing til I thought my legs were made of rainbow marshmellows, I stumbled over to my friend and screamed in her ear “WHODAFUQISTHIS?! WEGOTTAFINDOUT!” (I’m pretty sure I made her ear bleed. ) And the rest is history. Now lucky for us, An-Ten-Nae isn’t a one trick pony. Also part of LowRIDERz, a bassilicious trio, he has now teamed up with Releece to create…(drum roll pleeeease!)… Dimond Saints! If you’re craving deep dark and ridiculously sexy bass with smooth grime then look no further! Dimond Saints has got that handled with remixes of Lorde, Florence, and my fav remix, Jaymes Young’s “Moondust”, each one taking you through a sultry aural journey. In anticipation of their album release, Shingetsu, this Saturday at Lure in Hollywood, I’ve chosen “The Rising” to give you a taste of what you are going to become addicted to. I’m reeeeally feeling this one as it’s incredibly well crafted and makes me feel like I’m floating through space. ALSO!!!! Super stoked to be LIVE PAINTING at this event! I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold still long enough to put the brush to the canvas! This is huge to me because I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve painted to An-Ten-Nae’s Medicine Crunk Mixtape and now I’ll be painting to Dimond Saints live.. can’t even describe how ridiculous this is! Feelin’ Falsetto February 9, 2014Jules No CommentSo Giraffage decided to remix The Dream’s 2007 album “Love Hate” and I’m thinkin that was a real good decision. Each song has a chill smooth vibe to it that’s perfect for a Sunday afternoon. You can throw this on and just feel good. Maybe make a sandwich or maybe just sketch a quick realistic portrait of Morgan Freeman. I gotta say my fav song is Falsetto. Why? Obviously the chipmunk voice. If you add that in there, I will swoon and blog about it…but don’t get me wrong, it has to be a TASTEFUL chipmunk voice. This is all about taste here folks. Well done Giraffage, well done. Seriously, if you’re Kyle Lambert you can whip up this rough sketch of Morgan to this album. Chill, R&B, Remixchill, falsetto, giraffage, love hate, remix, the dreamShare : Tweet
